Head over to the Lansdown Park School on Stockwood Lane on Saturday, October 15th to enjoy the first ever Hengrove & Stockwood Local Food Festival…

The event, taking place between 10am and 4pm, aims to celebrate all that Stockwood has to offer: a vast amount of green space, ancient orchards being brought back into use, children’s food growing projects and much more.

Entrance is free, and includes:

  • Kid’s Cooking Club with award-winning local school cook Bridget Carter, and Ariaf’s “chapattis plus”
  • The Bristol Apple Press Collective will be making juice using apples from the rediscovered orchard on Stockwood’s Open Space nature reserve
  • Guided walks – foraging with writer and TV wild foods expert Andy Hamilton, and photography with Graham Parish
  • Children’s activities including crafts and face painting
  • Launch of the Edible Cities initiative, for future cheap, healthy, local food supplies
  • Information, displays and talks from The Community Farm, The Severn Project, Friends of Stockwood Open Spaces, Stockwood WI, local allotment holders, and the Sustainable City team
  • Local food stalls – including allotment produce and a seed and plant swap
  • Live music including the Stockwood Concert Band.

Entry is free, and visitors are encouraged to bring seeds and plants to swap, as well as apples to be juiced (and bottles to take the juice home in!)

The festival is organised by the Neighbourhood Partnership: you can find more information on HandS ON – the Hengrove and Stockwood Online Neighbourhood – at http://handsonlocalfood.weebly.com

Baking’s never been a strong point of mine, and I’m willing to confess that I’ve used shop-bought pastry on more than one occasion to cut corners. My first ever attempts, under the watchful eye of Mrs Smith in my Home Economics classes at school, told me that it wasn’t my forte: the mini fruit tarts that I proudly brought home and that were subsequently left unearth seemed to prove this point. And so, when I was invited to join the first of Iza Redon’s ‘Delicious Puddings’ classes at the Southville Centre – focusing on pastry – I arrived with a little trepidation… Read the rest of this entry »
