Signs had been up on the window of what used to be The Chill Out Cafe for a month or two, informing passers by that the Siam Angel Cafe would be ‘opening early September’. Working just a few doors down the road, I pass the place every morning and evening and have been watching the place take shape. It’s always great to see new independents opening up in Bristol, and last week saw the opening of an exciting new business in Clifton in the form of butcher Ruby & White. The former Threshers shop at 48 Whiteladies Road has now been taken over by neighbouring The Cowshed’s Adam Denton, offering local shoppers a butcher, wine shop and delicatessen, all in one place. As of Monday, August 1st, Bristol will be home to another branch of South West mini-chain Boston Tea Party, with a building on the corner of Cheltenham Road and Bath Buildings now home to the company’s fourth Bristol cafe. Another new Bristol restaurant has appeared over the last week, with number 146 St Michaels Hill having been turned into a “traditional Italian restaurant” called La Passione, owned by the same people that are behind the restaurant of the same name in Kingswood…

At a time when so many local pubs are shutting, and with Wetherspoons having announced that they plan on doubling the number of pubs that they have in the UK, it’s always good to see new local ventures starting up. The latest of these in Clifton is the Black Boy Inn at 171 Whiteladies Road, which closed around Christmas time but which was bought in March and is now completely unrecognisable from what it was before.
